Is zirconia crown better than metal ceramic crown?

When it comes to choosing the type of crown for teeth, we should choose based on its aesthetics and strength. In that aspect zirconia crowns are preferred over the conventional metal ceramic crown and full metal crowns.

Zirconia crowns can be solid zirconia or layered crowns.

Solid zirconia are highly durable to withstand forceful chewing and grinding and therefore suitable for patients with bruxism whereas metal ceramic crown in bruxism may result in chipping of ceramic layers. Solid zirconia are preferred for posterior crowns.

Layered zirconia is more translucent and opalescent and therefore suitable for both anterior and posterior crowns.

Zirconia crowns are 100%metal free and therefore do not cause gingival darkening and also removes the possibility of exposed metal margins in case of gum recession. They are highly biocompatible and will not cause any allergic reactions in patients who have metal allergies. The smooth surface re

duces plaque accumulation and the material also promotes healthy tissue response making them extremely safe to use inside mouth.

The enamel of our teeth is translucent upto 70%and dentin 30% giving our teeth a glassy appearance. The metal ceramic crowns have reduced translucency due to the presence of metal and therefore appear brighter inside the mouth.

The zirconia crowns are highly translucent and can transmit the color of adjacent teeth thereby can accurately match the colour of the patient's natural teeth. Currently the demand for zirconia restorations far exceeds the demand for metal ceramic crowns.
